Having grown up in a secluded house in the woods, Sophie Smorczewski is captivated by the interconnectedness of nature. Her paintings reflect memories of landscapes, softened and altered by time, lending them a dreamlike quality.
Drawn to the intricate connections in nature—such as trees communicating through fungal networks or termites constructing colonies—Smorczewski explores these relationships in her art. Utilizing transient elements like mist, rain, and the brief blooming of flowers, her abstract mark-making captures the fleeting essence of nature through energetic lines and textured colors.
The artist feels a deep connection to old trees, whose rings carry memories of seasons past, mirroring how her handmade pigments subtly shift over time. Her artwork offers a glimpse into the past, much like the trees themselves.

About the Artist
Sophie Smorczewski is a London-based abstract landscape painter who works with oil and homemade pigments on canvas. She infuses her work with a living quality that offers a multi-sensory experience as the pigments naturally oxidize and decay over time.
Currently pursuing her MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art, Smorczewski holds a BFA from the Manchester School of Art, where she graduated with distinction and received the Manchester Academy of Fine Art Prize.
Smorczewski’s work has been exhibited widely across the UK in both physical and online spaces, with recent appearances in London, Manchester, and Hampshire.
