The Venice Biennale has unveiled its 2026 edition, featuring 111 artists and collectives in a presentation defined by focus and nuance. Guided by the late Artistic Director Koyo Kouoh’s vision, the main exhibition prioritizes density over scale, highlighting transnational perspectives and practices from the Global South.
The 61st International Art Exhibition, In Minor Keys (9 May to 22 November 2026), arrives with quiet intensity. Appointed Artistic Director of the Visual Arts Department in late 2024, the Cameroon-born curator shaped much of the framework before her sudden passing in May 2025. The project is now set to unfold as both tribute and realization, carried out by the close-knit team she personally selected.
At the heart of In Minor Keys is a recalibration of scale and tempo, reflecting her commitment to transnational dialogue and practices beyond dominant market circuits. Rather than organizing the exhibition through conventional thematic sections, she structured the project around conceptual motifs—shrines, processions, schools, and spaces of rest—that will guide both interpretation and movement.
These motifs foreground relational thinking over rigid categorization. Exhibition design mirrors this approach: walls are minimized where possible, and spatial flow encourages a processional experience, inviting visitors to move with heightened sensory awareness and contemplative attention.
Two large-scale dedicated presentations will anchor the Central Pavilion, honoring figures who shaped her intellectual and curatorial trajectory. Elsewhere, the “schools” motif highlights artist-led institutions and pedagogical ecosystems as sites of shared knowledge and community formation. By elevating these grassroots structures, the Biennale will broaden the definition of artistic practice to encompass infrastructural and educational labor.
Live programming will extend the exhibition’s temporal and affective range. A procession of poets in the Giardini—echoing Kouoh’s earlier literary initiatives in West Africa—will emphasize embodied, collective forms of expression, while designated rest areas and large-scale installations throughout the venues will slow the rhythm of viewing, reinforcing the call for pause and reflection.
The Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement will not be awarded this year, as she did not finalize recipients before her death. Their absence underscores the edition’s deliberate departure from spectacle-driven expectations.
In Minor Keys proposes a new model for large-scale international exhibitions. By privileging intimacy, attentiveness, and quieter artistic frequencies, the Biennale aims to reframe the global platform as a space for careful listening and reflection, leaving Kouoh’s vision resonant throughout Venice.
