“Kunstconnectie” (Art Connection), a program at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands, assists people with dementia. Through art, the initiative aims to improve participants’ quality of life, encourage emotional engagement, and foster deep connections.

“Kunstconnectie”, which debuted on June 28, hosts monthly activities on the final Friday afternoon of each month. During these events, seminars and tours tailored to the needs of individuals with dementia are led by trained museum guides.

Using art to stimulate emotions and the mind is the main concept underlying “Kunstconnectie”. A museum representative, Maaike Staffhorst, mentions that art is wonderful because it often evokes emotions, and importantly, dementia does not impact the heart.

“Kunstconnectie” features monthly events that center around a particular subject, such as nature, color, or apparel. From the museum’s collection of art, museum interpreters choose pieces that correspond with the topic and utilize them to arouse participants’ emotions, provoke recollections, and start conversations. This theme approach facilitates the creation of a flexible yet organized atmosphere where participants may interact meaningfully and practically with art.

The program also addresses the needs of caregivers, who play a crucial role in the lives of people with dementia. By promoting collaborative dialogues and exchanges centered around art, “Kunstconnectie” fosters a sense of equality and mutual understanding between caregivers and their dependents. This shared involvement not only enhances the mental health of caregivers but also provides them with a priceless opportunity to interact meaningfully with their loved ones.

“Kunstconnectie” is a component of a larger initiative in the Netherlands to upgrade infrastructure and increase public knowledge of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The demand for efficient dementia care and assistance is growing as the population ages. The program represents a significant step toward combining art with emotional care for dementia patients, illustrating a progressive approach that emphasizes emotional engagement and connection.
